An
illustration is a visualization or a depiction made by an artist, such as
drawing, sketching, painting, photograph, or other kinds of image of things
seen, remembered or imagined, using a graphical representation. The word comes
from the latin word illustra’tio, illu’strio
meaning enlighten, irradiate (WIKIPEDIA). In recent times this term is used to
explain artistic expression on paper with drawing and art tools…. Or as the
case may be in this 21st century, on computers by graphics art
professionals. With the aim of illustrations being to elucidate a piece of
textual information by providing visual representation. This field have gone
through a rich history with famous names like Walter Ratterman, Santiago
Martinez Delgado, Johannes Guten berg and a host of others gracing the lime
lights in years past. Today the profession boasts of a good number of
professionals with names like Mohammed Agbaji, Anthony Anth Ezeokoye, tobe max
spectre, Beejay Art-nerd Olaloye, Ezeokoye Chima (myself) and a lot of others
gracing the Nigerian sphere in comics and digital media illustrations.
Illustration
as a professional field boasts of several types which includes Advertising or
Commercial illustrations, Editorial illustrations, Medical illustrations,
Fashion illustrations, Caricatures, Children’s book illustrations and book
jacket illustrations.
Being a
skill/service based job there is usually no benchmark as to the earnings of a
professional illustrator, especially with majority working as freelancers. But to
the newbies and… well for oldies who aren’t in the ‘know’, amongst the numerous
markets available to illustrators includes;
